Dress for Session Success - Siblings

One of the questions I get asked the most as sessions approach is "what do we wear?" and "can we look as good as all those other families?"  My answer is always "yes!"  I have families that plan their outfits months in advance, those that show up declaring "this is us!" and others that arrive at their sessions with a truckload of options for me to sift through.  All of these scenarios are represented in the galleries on this site, but... because I've been asked so often, I thought I'd delve a little deeper, starting with siblings and sharing some of my favorite looks and places to shop...

Overall, I tell my families that coordination (vs matching) is the word.  To layout everyone's outfits on their bed like they would one outfit, to match solids with pattern and different textures and layers - this is also the case with sibling photos.  A pop of color is always great, logos are not...

A tried and true formula for a boy/girl sibling duo includes a patterned dress or skirt for the girl, with the boy in a solid shirt pulled from that pattern.  If the little girl is wearing a solid shirt with a patterned skirt, have the boy’s top match a different color in her skirt.  The same goes for a patterned shirt on a boy... I love these examples of this kind of pairing with brothers and sisters:

This brother sister look below came from J Crew Crew Cuts, which I absolutely love... They have great shirts for boys and amazing dresses for girls...

Some of my favorite shots of sisters and brothers also share the same coordinating goals.  Check out with these duos did to achieve timeless harmony in their images while staying true to their individual personalities...

I like to never say never, and will admit that I have had clients show up with their match on and have loved the way its photographed.  Here are some examples of siblings rocking the match...

This threesome continuously show up for their session looking straight out of a Vineyard Vines catalog...

I have been photographing these sisters since the very start of Katie B. Photography -- talk about dressed for success.  Here are some examples of matching, in a not quite matchy way... Their first look came from Mini Boden and their second from Busy-Bees.

I hope these images inspired you and convinced you that you too can get your session dress on!  Stay tuned for more on Dressing for Session Success...
